Challenge
Royal Caribbean International (RCI) wanted to embed a human-centered (design thinking), creative problem-solving approach to innovation across teams in their organization. The aim of the initiative was to enable staff to approach business challenges with a human-centered lens and create fresh and satisfying solutions. RCI's Director of Learning & Development (L&D) was looking for a training and support partner to work alongside his team to develop and deliver Design Thinking-based innovation training for RCI staff around the world.
Approach
Contexto, in partnership with DesignThinkers Group (DTG), co-created a 4-day "Foundations of Design Thinking" course along with customized materials and a learning resource website. The course included hands-on, team-based application of design thinking to a set of real internal business challenges. The combined project team also trained a select team of trainers to deliver the RCI-exclusive Design Thinking intensive across business units around the world.
Outcome
The hands-on, experiential training enabled trainees to collaboratively identify the root causes of longstanding challenges in their business units and start to develop novel solution concepts for testing and validation. This approach had the added benefit of exposing broad swaths of staff to and building demand for the training. By the end of 2019, the RCI L&D Team had trained teams in Miami, Florida, and the Philippines.
